Social Worker Compact

Too many communities lack access to social work services because of workforce shortages and duplicative licensing requirements. The Social Work Licensure Compact creates a legally binding framework that allows licensed social workers to practice seamlessly across member states. This model legislation promotes license portability, strengthens the social work workforce, and expands access to essential services. By establishing uniform eligibility standards and mutual recognition of home-state licensure, the compact reduces red tape while protecting clients. It also creates an Interstate Commission to ensure consistent oversight, data sharing, and collaboration across states. Adoption of the compact will enhance professional mobility and improve access to high-quality care for families nationwide.

More than 123 million Americans live in mental healthcare shortage areas, and outdated licensing rules compound the problem.

State lawmakers can adopt the model legislation below to join the Social Worker Compact.
